Dear readers

Today I want to share with you the story of the coffee table book and where the idea started.

Everytime when we present training, lecturers ask us for ideas of how some of the tools in clickUP has successfully been implemented in other courses. What benefits are there in using technology in your course and most important – what is the educational benefits. So, when we designed the clickUP Intermediate course, I decided to share a few stories of Education Innovation with the participants on how the Assessment tools are used and implemented in four different courses. During that time our Department also acquired the Cultivate Course Material (developed by Eiffel Corp). They had a Power Point template that looked like a book. And then I realised but I could put the information into a book format so that it looks like a book, thus the Coffee table book!

The idea has since grown. This book should be used for Stories of Education Innovation – whether it is a different way of face-to-face teaching or using clickUP tools or using other methods of teaching, they should all be told so that we can get new ideas from each other.

Here are a few examples [Please note that these files are rather big in file size]:

Small class examples: (<200 students)

  • Ms Alecia Samuels’ story of collaboration and teaming in a Masters Degree course for Early Childhood Intervention. Post graduate module, 20 students in class, web-dependent course.
  • Dr Pieter Pretorius is sharing how he facilitates a post-graduate course in Engineering Management – the blend of face-to-face and clickUP. This is a web dependend module.
  • Dr Nico Claassen shares how he has build his courses over a six year period. The courses are presented to both under and post graduate students. He also makes use of a blended approach with lots of activities in clickUP and face-to-face interventions. Enjoy the story.
  • Dr Gene van Heerden and Dr Melanie Wiese is teaching a Post Graduate course in Marketing using an active learning approach.  Listen to their story on using various strategies and activities to keep the class active and to expect the unexpected.
  • Listen to Professor Helena Barnard's story of Education Innovation for the Doctoral Programme in Business Administration presented at the Gordon Institute of Business Science.  Their challenge is to get their students into a reflective mode and also to assist them to become academics (scholars), to engage in academic writing and reading. Through various techniques they succeed in creating an online community of practice who learn together in an online environment.
  • Dr Quixi Sonntag shares how they use clickUP creatively to enhance critical thinking at the Veterinary Science Faculty.

Large class examples (>201 students)

  • Dr Hanli Dippenaar’s story of facilitating a large class using clickUP and how she build her course over a few years. Under graduate module, 500 – 600 students in class, web-enhanced course.
  • Dr Martina Jordaan tells her story of dealing with 1500 – 1700 undergraduate students – how to plan, manage and organise your teaching and learning practice to be most effective and to survive such a large class with numerous projects.
  • Prof Anton Kok, Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning shares an overview of hybrid learning initiatives in the Faculty of Law.
  • Learning Analytics - Prof Oberholster and Mrs Fick explains how they are using different tools in clickUP to identify at risk students at an early stage during the Six week project that they run for first year students at the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.

International collaboration

  • Mrs Bertha Jacobs tells her story of International collaboration (group work) with students from Iowa State University (USA) and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (Australia). This is for fourth year students and follows a blended approach.

Other technologies

  • Clickers Case Study at the University of Pretoria - in this presentation you will hear from various Departments how they are using clickers to engage with students in class.
  • The Mobile experience: Dr Ronel Callaghan shares how they are using mobile technology in the classroom.  This enable them to get their students engaged, connected and they learn while also having fun :-)
  • Media in skills lab training at the Faculty of Health Sciences: Prof Rhena Delport shares how they are using simulations in a case-based environment to practice certain skills.
  • Immersive Education: Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality - a story of education innovation shared by Prof Ronny Webber-Youngman, Head of the Department for Mining Engineering.
  • Dr Maxime Madder shares their story of conducting electronic surveys, using mobile devices, as part of a Community Based Project.

You may ask, so what?

The purpose of this blog is to:

  • show you the stories so that you can get more ideas to enhance your own teaching and learning practice and
  • encourage you to participate in this project.

I encourage lecturers to tell the story themselves because then you don’t have to listen to me all the time  BUT it is YOUR story to tell and not mine …

Hi everyone


Since more and more lecturers are starting to use the Quiz tool (old clickUP) or the Test/Survey tool (new clickUP), I think it is time to share the how to with the wider community out there. UP has acquired a campus wide licence for Respondus, so before you get started, you have to install the software on your computer. All the steps and the how to install the software is available on the new clickUP on the EI Support tab. If you are not yet registered on the new clickUP system, then please ask e-support[at] to give you access to the clickUP Workshop module and then you will be able to also see the EI Support tab.

After you have installed the software, you have to prepare the questions in a specific format in MS Word.

When you prepare questions for a quiz/test/survey on clickUP, you can use the Respondus software to import some question types. These question types are:

    Multiple choice
  • Multiple reponse (Multiple answer*)
  • Matching
  • True False
  • Paragraph (Essay*)
  • Short answer
  • Fill in the blank*
  • Multiple fill in the blank*
  • Ordering*

* = new clickUP

Please refer to the document on the standard format for importing questions. Here is also a good example of what a properly formatted MS Word file would look like to be imported with Respondus.

Tips (click here for more detail on how to clear formatting):

  • There must be NO formatting in the document, i.e. NO Heading1, heading2, etc. NO tabs.
  • Ensure that each question has a correct answer otherwise Respondus will select option A as the correct response.
  • DO NOT add question types which are not supported by Respondus – it will simply not import.
  • After preparing the document, open the Respondus software on your computer. Follow the steps in Respondus to import the questions into the Question database (old clickUP) or Pools (new clickUP) options in clickUP. There is help available in the form of videos on the Respondus website. If you get stuck, please contact your Instructional Designer for assistance.
